The U.S. stock market is hitting new highs day after day.
Technology-driven gains have been maintained despite a significant drop in the likelihood of a rate cut in March. Fed Watch, which reached 90% at the beginning of the year, has come below 50% for a rate cut in March, but Nvidia jumped more than 4% on expectations of an improvement in the AI semiconductor industry, leading the tech rebound. Shares of major semiconductor stocks such as AMD and Qualcomm continue to rise after TSMC's surprising performance. The semiconductor ETF (SOXX) also rose as much as 4%.
Among the indicators released on the 19th, the preliminary reading of the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index for January was 78.8, up from 69.7 the previous month, and one-year expected inflation was 2.9%, down slightly from 3.1% the previous month. Expectations for a rate cut are also lower as the consumer economy is good and expected inflation is also lower. Bond markets ended strong, with lower expectations for a rate cut. After slightly reversing the recent decline, caution is in play for next week's FOMC.
Samsung Electronics' 4 percent gain last Friday seems to be a relief from the geopolitical risks that have plagued our markets. Assuming an extreme decline at a time when the U.S. stock market is strong doesn't seem to help investment. Below the KOSPI 2500, a strategy to increase stocks seems necessary.
